GEN2005 - Music in the Modern World
This is an introductory course on music appreciation for non-musicians. The course introduces students to a systematic study of the building blocks of music in order to enhance their awareness of the main musical styles of Western and non-Western cultures. Examples are selected from the European classical tradition, the Chinese tradition and other musical traditions, including popular music.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
- command a critical knowledge of the basic rudiments of music;
- identify and evaluate a list of representative music pieces;
- master the stylistic features of Western and Chinese Music; and
- critically analyse music’s place in the social/historical/cultural development of society.
