This module provides students with a basic understanding of financial instruments, investment theories and the investment environment with an emphasis on the Hong Kong context. Students will acquire a balanced knowledge of both investment theory and practice. They will have many opportunities to apply investment theories and computer skills to tackle investment problems and design investment portfolios through practical exercises, mini-case studies and projects.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. describe the operations of the securities markets and the range of investment instruments in Hong Kong;

  2. explain the distinction between risky assets and risk-free assets on the one hand, and diversifiable risk and non-diversifiable risk on the other;

  3. apply the risk and return framework in the process of valuing financial assets and describe some basic investment theories; and

  4. apply investment theories to questions and problems.
