This module is designed to introduce the contemporary business systems and environments of East Asian countries to students. With a strategic perspective, this module focuses mainly on particulars of corporate systems and strategies of multinational and local firms in Asian countries, such as Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, India, Taiwan, and China, etc. In addition to issues of specific countries, this module also discusses important management topics that are important in doing business in Asia, such as human resource management, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility. Students will elaborate and analyse how the unique political and cultural contexts, as well as characteristics of Asian business systems, contribute to the economic growth and their corporate success and failure in these countries.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. examine the political, economic, cultural, and technological environments of Asian countries, all of which explain Asian business systems;

  2. identify the unique characteristics and strategies of Asian business groups, such as Japanese Keiretsu, Korean Chaebol and Chinese State-owned enterprises, etc;

  3. analyse and evaluate Asian business practices and theories, as well as the applicability and generalizability of fundamental knowledge of management; and

  4. increase the awareness of contribution to the global economy by Asian firms.
