The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK)\u2019s\u00a0School of Decision Sciences\u00a0and\u00a0Chef Digital Limited\u00a0have developed \u201cWarehouseGenie\u201d,\u00a0Hong Kong\u2019s first real-time smart warehouse system integrating artificial intelligence (AI), drones, and augmented reality (AR). The innovation won\u00a0the Gold Medal with Jury\u00a0Congratulations<\/span>\u00a0at the International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2026 on 14 March. The system leverages advanced technologies\u2014including generative AI (GenAI), drones, AR, and the Internet of Things (IoT)\u2014to address key challenges in the warehousing sector, such as high staff turnover, complex standard operating procedures,\u00a0and rising demands for safety and accuracy.<\/p>

WarehouseGenie\u2019s platform operates in\u00a0dual-modes\u2014operational and training\u2014seamlessly linking real-time data with virtual overlays to create\u00a0an AI-assisted,\u00a0smart working environment. In operations mode, frontline workers receive instant, step-by-step guidance through AR smart glasses for safe and precise task execution. Simultaneously,\u00a0drones provide live monitoring, while IoT sensors track key metrics, such as workers\u2019 movement paths, picking times, error rates, and safety incidents. The\u00a0AI engine analyses both real-time and historical data, benchmarking\u00a0performance against industry standards and internal records. These insights empower management to identify bottlenecks, implement targeted improvements, lower\u00a0turnover, and boost overall productivity.<\/p>

In training mode, WarehouseGenie recreates high-pressure scenarios like \u201cBlack Friday\u201d peak-season\u00a0operations, enabling new hires to engage in hands-on practice guided by AR instructions and to receive immediate\u00a0performance feedback. This immersive approach is projected to reduce traditional training time by up to 40%, enabling faster onboarding, better skill acquisition,\u00a0and improved workplace safety.<\/p>

Project leader Dr George\u00a0Ho, Associate Professor in the Department of Supply Chain and Information Management, stated, \u201cWarehouseGenie transforms traditional labour-intensive warehouses into intelligent, AI-driven collaborative ecosystems. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies, it allows new employees to quickly master essential skills, while significantly enhancing productivity, workflow\u00a0efficiency, and occupational safety. The system also paves\u00a0the way for sustainable business models and new opportunities in the retail and logistics sectors.\u201d<\/p>

The project have\u00a0received approximately HK$1 million in funding from the Research Matching Grant Scheme of the University Grants Committee.<\/p>
