The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) places strong emphasis on sustainable development and fostering harmony among humans, nature, and other living species. To raise awareness among the University community of environmental protection, community engagement, and sustainability, HSUHK hosted the \u201cHSUHK Green Eco Trek Fun Fest\u201d today (1 March). The event attracted around 300 staff members, students, alumni, and supporters, who explored scenic nature trails near HSUHK\u2019s campus in Shatin.<\/p>

During the trek, participants scanned QR codes to access an audio guide narrated by Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK. The guide shared interesting facts about the natural environment, insights into the University\u2019s sustainability initiatives, and information on its achievements in promoting green practices and campus eco greening.<\/p>

To further enhance awareness of environmental conservation, the event\u2019s mascot was designed after the rare amphibian\u00a0Paramesotriton hongkongensis<\/i>, commonly known as the \u201cHong Kong warty newt\u201d. As one of the few species named after Hong Kong and protected under local legislation, the newt inhabits Ma Lai Hau Hang, an area near the University, making it a meaningful and fitting choice for the mascot of the event.<\/p>

At the opening ceremony, Ms Luanne Lim, Chairman of the Board of Governors, emphasised HSUHK\u2019s commitment to sustainable development. She remarked that education extends beyond the classroom, with nature serving as the greatest teacher. She expressed hope that participants would appreciate the beauty of the natural environment and incorporate the principles of conservation and sustainability into their daily lives.<\/p>

Dr Moses Cheng, Chairman of the Council, highlighted that the HSUHK campus is situated on a hillside where bamboo is widely planted and extensively used as a building material. He noted that the principles of sustainability are embedded throughout the University\u2019s curriculum, research, and campus development. He further stressed that genuine sustainability goes beyond green architecture and low carbon lifestyles, reflecting instead an inclusive and compassionate humanistic spirit\u2014an essential quality for future leaders.<\/p>

The Fun Fest also featured a series of green themed game booths and nature inspired handicraft workshops, offering participants interactive and enjoyable opportunities to deepen their understanding of environmental protection and sustainable development.<\/p>
