The School of Communication (SCOM) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) held the 9th Business Journalism Awards Presentation Ceremony today (10 April) to recognise outstanding journalists in business news and their contributions to society as well as the industry. The ceremony was officiated by Mrs Apollonia Liu, Director of Information Services of the HKSAR Government.<\/p>

The award-winning organisations include: TVB, HK01, i-CABLE News, HOY TV, Now TV, Phoenix TV, Bloomberg Businessweek (Chinese Edition), Radio Television Hong Kong, South China Morning Post, Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly, Ming Pao, Wen Wei Po, Ta Kung Pao, China Daily Hong Kong, Dot Dot News, WuChatProp, The Collective HK, and East Week.<\/p>

In her speech, Mrs Liu stated that business news is intricately linked to the everyday lives of citizens, encompassing not only \u201cfood, clothing, housing, and transportation,\u201d but also the development of Hong Kong’s economy, finance, and various industries. She highlighted that last year, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government made significant efforts to stimulate economic growth and pursue development, alongside a series of supportive measures announced by the central government to benefit Hong Kong, which provided a wealth of material for business news coverage. However, while capitalising on opportunities, the HKSAR government must also navigate challenges. Mrs Liu pointed out that the United States has increased tariffs on China to 125%, a move she characterised as bullying. In response, the HKSAR government not only firmly opposes this action but is also closely monitoring the situation and developments, offering support to local enterprises from various angles. She stressed that in this context, news professionals have a crucial role to play by delivering the latest and most accurate information, including specifics about the U.S. measures, their implications for Hong Kong, and the government’s responses, thereby bolstering confidence across all sectors and collaboratively transforming crises into opportunities.<\/p>

Dr the Hon Moses Cheng, Chairman of the Council of HSUHK, emphasised the critical role of professional business journalists in providing the public with accurate information and fostering rational market development, ultimately contributing to economic growth. Dr Cheng pointed out that artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the rules of the world, and society needs professional news gatekeepers now more than ever to provide the public with truthful, reliable, and in-depth reports. He also expressed his expectation for journalists to continue upholding their professional spirit by producing works that integrate business insights with social concerns.<\/p>

Professor Simon Ho, President of HSUHK, remarked that journalists are essential in analysing economic trends from various critical perspectives and interpreting business phenomena with rigor. This approach not only disseminates professional knowledge but also fosters rational dialogue within society. He encouraged the journalism community to harness the power of the fourth estate, documenting the evolution of our times and driving social innovation. Professor Ho reiterated the University\u2019s commitment to nurturing new generations of media talent equipped with digital skills and a strong adherence to journalistic ethics, especially in an era that is increasingly influenced by AI.<\/p>

Professor Scarlet Tso, Dean of SCOM, said that this year\u2019s Business Journalism Awards received over 600 entries, marking a record high for the third consecutive year. She stated that this achievement reflects the industry\u2019s acknowledgment of the importance of professional journalism awards and highlights Hong Kong journalists\u2019 consistent commitment to address social and economic issues. She said that SCOM will introduce a new programme \u201cMaster of Arts in Digital Media for Online Communication\u201d this September. The new programme will focus on data analysis, digital storytelling, and business communication strategies, equipping students with the skills to leverage digital technology in enhancing corporate communication as they invigorate the journalism and communication sectors.<\/p>

The 9th Business Journalism Awards featured nine categories, with a total of 34 awards recognising excellence in various journalism fields including business and financial reporting. Over 60 professional judges from diverse sectors evaluated the submissions based on criteria such as news value, impact, originality, exclusivity, reporting quality, writing proficiency, analytical skill, and visual storytelling.<\/p>

The \u201cYoung Business Journalist of the Year\u201d award was presented to Kwok Hin-tung of Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly, and the \u201cBusiness Journalist of the Year\u201d award was presented to Lee Yun-yan, also from Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly. Other awards included \u201cBest Business News Reporting\u201d; \u201cBest Business News Series Reporting\u201d; \u201cBest Property Market News Reporting\u201d; \u201cBusiness \u201cEnvironment; Social; and Governance\u201d News\u201d; \u201cBest Economic & Financial Policy News Reporting\u201d; \u201cBest Business Technology News Reporting\u201d; and \u201cBest Greater Bay Area Business News Reporting\u201d.<\/p>
