The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) announced the appointment of Professor Mark Shuttleworth as the Dean of the School of Translation and Foreign Languages (STFL) with effect from 1 October 2024.

Professor Shuttleworth has extensive education, research and administration experience. He is currently the Head and Professor of the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Before joining HKBU in 2018, he held various academic positions at renowned institutions such as University College London, Imperial College London, and University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. Before that, he taught Russian, German and French for four years at a secondary school, showcasing his diverse cultural and linguistic expertise.

Professor Shuttleworth has demonstrated a strong commitment to programme and curriculum development. During his tenure at HKBU, he played a pivotal role in designing and implementing the innovative Technology Stream of the MA in Translation and Bilingual Communication programme, and more recently he has been looking for ways to incorporate identifiable focuses in translation technology, intercultural and minority studies, and non-Chinese non-English languages within the undergraduate curriculum.

Professor Shuttleworth has made significant contributions to research in translation technology pedagogy, Wikipedia translation, and metaphor in translation. He is best known for his Dictionary of Translation Studies and has published a total of four books and special issues. His work has been published in various prestigious journals, and he has delivered numerous keynote speeches and presentations at local and international conferences.

Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK, welcomes Professor Shuttleworth. \u201cProfessor Shuttleworth has outstanding achievements in teaching, programme development, research and administration. I am sure under his leadership, STFL will inject more innovative elements into the School\u2019s developments and nurture more translation talents who are proficient in the latest technology.\u201d

President Ho also expresses his gratitude to Professor Gilbert Fong Chee-fun, the incumbent Dean of STFL, for his long-term outstanding service and contributions. Professor Fong will continue to serve as Emeritus Dean and Professor of STFL.<\/p>
