The brand new Master of Arts in Translation (Business and Legal) programme of Hang Seng Management College, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, has been approved by the Executive Council and will launch in September 2016. HSMC held a programme briefing to introduce it to the media at the College Chamber on 29 April 2016. Provost Gilber tFONG, Dean of School of Translation, Associate Dean Shelby CHAN, Dr Elvis LEE, Assistant Professor, Adjunct Professor King Kui SIN, who is the Special Consultant of School of Translation and Dr SIU Sai Cheong, Programme Director of Bachelor of Translation with Business introduced the programme details and admission arrangements.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This programme covers writing for business and law, as well as theories and techniques of written translation and interpretation. It also includes commercial and legal knowledge, computer assisted applications and knowledge of the translation industry in major Chinese communities. Compulsory subjects include Concepts and Terminology in Business and Law, Translation in Business and Law etc. With 13 elective modules, the programme comprehensively covers the knowledge of Business and Legal Translation.<\/p>\n

Provost Gilbert FONG said the programme concentrates on both theory and practice. With the combination of business, legal and translation, this programme helps graduates in joining the related industries as a professional translator.<\/p>\n

Dr Elvis LEE, Programme Director, stated that in addition to translation theories and techniques, other innovative elements such as computer assisted applications are also added. Students will be assigned to attend meetings or public relations activities for practice and given internship opportunities. These will help students in adapting to the industry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The School of Translation also invited a former member of the Bilingual Laws Advisory Committee, Professor SIN King Kui to be the Adjunct Professor and Special Consultant. Professor Sin pointed out that there is a high demand for professional translating personnel in the market. They are responsible for business related translation, including company charter, listing documents, listed company’s interim and year-end reports.<\/p>\n
