To recognise and encourage outstanding business journalists and honour their contributions to society and the industry, the School of Communication (SCOM) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) announced the results of the 5th Business Journalism Awards (BJA) on 22nd April 2021. This year, more than 500 entries coming in from over 300 journalists, who competed for awards in 9 categories covering various business and financial journalism areas. Nearly 80 distinguished professionals from different fields selected the award-winning entries according to judging criteria ranging from news value and impact, storytelling and writing skills, originality and exclusivity, quality, analytical skills to visual presentation of the coverage.<\/p>

Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government, reckoned that news reporting and analysis update and enhance the knowledge of the business sector and the public, broadening their horizons. \u201cIn the course of reforms of today\u2019s technological application and industries, there are a lot of new challenges and difficulties from business mode to everyday application, but there are also many new opportunities and new industries. For enterprises that wish to ride on the development trend and formulate visionary strategies, business news reporting has a very significant function that it enables enterprises to get comprehensive information as well as cross-industry views and analyses, and alerts them of risks.\u201d Mr Chan said.<\/p>

President Simon S M Ho said that, as one of the signature events of the HSUHK, the BJA commits to giving recognition to excellent business journalists in their quest for excellence. \u201cWe are not only encouraging the exchanges of experiences and insights among business journalists, but also giving the public a flashback of local and international market trends in the last year through the award-winning entries.\u201d<\/p>

Professor Scarlet Tso, Associate Vice-President (Communications and Public Affairs) and Dean of the School of Communication, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all sectors of the community for the support to the BJA throughout the past 5 years. She reckoned that despite the pandemic has brought global activities close to a halt, business news reporting never stops. Journalists have upheld professional attitudes and provided professional, objective and in-depth reports that helped the public grasp the pulse of society\u2019s politics and economy in this turbulent economic environment. She mentioned that the award-winning entries will be used as teaching materials in secondary schools, which will provide students with diverse knowledge of business and finance as well as high-quality news reporting and writing skills, and nurture their interest in business news, bringing profound impact to young people.<\/p>

With the aim of nurturing specialists in the business communication, corporate communication and communication technology fields, the SCOM has launched the Bachelor of Journalism and Communication (Honours) programme, the first of its kind in Hong Kong combining business and finance with journalism and communication. The SCOM also provides the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Convergent Media and the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication programmes. As the pandemic speeds up the technology development in the communication field, the SCOM proactively integrates elements of business communication and communication technology into the curricula, which include Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence, equipping students with the latest business and technology knowledge and skills to face the ever-evolving digital era.<\/p>

The awarded media organisations this year included: (names listed in no particular order) TVB, Cable TV, Now TV, Phoenix Satellite TV, Commercial Radio Hong Kong, HK01, iMoney, Hong Kong Economic Journal Monthly, Ming Pao Daily News, Sing Tao Daily, Apple Daily, China Daily Hong Kong and Bloomberg Business Week Chinese.<\/p>

Sophia Luo of China Daily Hong Kong garnered the \u201cBusiness Reporter of the Year\u201d, while Ma Difan of Ming Pao Daily News clinched the \u201cYoung Business Reporter of the Year\u201d. Other awards included \u201cBest Business News Reporting\u201d, \u201cBest Business News Series Reporting\u201d, \u201cBest Property Market News Reporting\u201d, \u201cBest Business & Finance Profile Interview\u201d, \u201cBest Economic & Financial Policy News Reporting\u201d, \u201cBest Business Technology News Reporting\u201d and \u201cBest Visual Design of Business News Reporting\u201d.<\/p>
