Over 500 guests from different sectors of the community participated in the event and witnessed the important milestone in HSUHK\u2019s history. Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the HKSAR Government, officiated at the ceremony and congratulated HSUHK\u2019s forward march to the future in new directions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16.8px;\">Ms Louisa Cheang, Chairman of Board of Governors of HSUHK, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the HKSAR Government for its strong support and recognition bestowed on HSUHK, which made HSUHK the first self-financing tertiary institution to be granted university status under the HKSAR Government\u2019s <em>Roadmap for Becoming a Private University<\/em>. She thanked all stakeholders for their efforts and contributions, saying that HSUHK would continue its mission to nurture well-rounded young talents and become a leading non-profit, private liberal-arts-oriented university in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16.8px;\">In her speech, Mrs Carrie Lam said, \u201cThe HKSAR Government adopts a parallel approach to drive the complementary development of publicly-funded and self-financing tertiary education. HSUHK\u2019s journey to university demonstrates how private universities could offer students more choices with variety and help to build a more diversified tertiary education system in Hong Kong, thus benefiting students with the contributions and support from different sectors of the community. I am thankful for HSUHK\u2019s contributions to Hong Kong for the past 40 years, and I wish HSUHK continuing success in the future to nurture more talents for Hong Kong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16.8px;\">Dr Moses Cheng, Chairman of Council of HSUHK, said the acquiring of university title was an affirmation of HSUHK\u2019s founders\u2019 vision and ideals, as well as a recognition of the dedication and commitment of everyone at HSUHK for the past eight years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16.8px;\">Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK, was grateful to the support from the community to HSUHK. He said HSUHK would uphold its founding motto \u2018Erudition and Perseverance\u2019 and diligently implement the initiatives set out in the University\u2019s \u201c5-Year Strategic Plan\u201d to offer more innovative and diversified programmes and nurture more responsible future professionals and leaders for the society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16.8px;\">At the Dinner, the Chief Executive, together with senior management of HSUHK and the officiating guests, participated in the \u201cNew Milestones\u201d commemorative ceremony and toasting to mark the significant milestone of HSUHK to become a private university with a difference. HSUHK also presented souvenirs to recent major donors to recognise their contributions and support to the development of the University. The air of festivity was further enhanced by the performances by Dr Moses Cheng, Chairman of Council of HSUHK, Ms H M Tong, Council Member of HSUHK, Dr Tom Fong, Vice-President (Organisational Development) of HSUHK, HSUHK\u2019s alumna Ms Cheryl Yung, and the HSUHK Sinfonietta. The performances helped to raise funds for the University\u2019s development and made the gathering occasion a warm and memorable one for the guests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16.8px;\">Participating guests of the Dinner included Mr Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, Secretary for Education, Dr Tan Tieniu, Deputy Director of the Central Government\u2019s Liaison Office in Hong Kong, Professor Anthony Cheung Bing-leung, Chairman of Committee on Self-financing Post-secondary Education, Mr Tim Lui Tim-leung, Chairman of the Education Commission, Ms Louisa Cheang, Chairman of Board of Governors of HSUHK, Dr Moses Cheng, Chairman of Council of HSUHK, and members of HSUHK\u2019s Board of Governors and
