This module introduces the underlying factors and processes of the urban development in Hong Kong. Key concepts of urbanization, such as urban development theories and planning principles are examined with reference to the thoughts of modernism and post-modernism. The module focuses on the urban evolution and associated land administration in Hong Kong, with special references to different areas like evolution of city development, topography, praya (waterfront) reclamation, compact city development mode and social life, town planning process and the “invisible hands” in the market, government policies and developer hegemony, and urban development in modern and post-modern societies.

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. critically explain the development and evolution of urban Hong Kong;
   
   


2. conduct profile studies on selected districts and identify the needs of the city;
   
   


3. critically discuss the issue of urban development; and


4. analyze and interpret research materials and on-site surveys.
