Year of Study:2-4
Credit Units: 3
Duration: 45hours
Prerequisites: Nil
Module Description
This module is designed to introduce students to the sociological study of gender and its associated issues. The central theme of the module is the changes and continuities in gender roles in both western countries and Asian societies. It also includes studies of the social processes that influence our lives and gender identities, as well as the connections between gender, power, class, and social inequality.

This module examines how the different institutions of family, labour market, school, mass media and government become pivotal sites for interaction, reproduction, and evolution of gender roles. Most importantly, this module investigates how gender is interconnected with other social systems of domination such as class and race.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. examine how the definitions of gender (theories) and gender related behaviour (everyday life practices) are shaped by social processes.

  2. exercise appropriate judgment on the dynamics of gender, society, and culture.

  3. critically analyse the inter-relationships between gender and society, and apply the learned knowledge to daily life and work situations.
