Module Description
This is an introductory course on music appreciation for non-musicians. The course introduces students to a systematic study of the building blocks of music in order to enhance their awareness of the main musical styles of Western and non-Western cultures. Examples are selected from the European classical tradition, the Chinese tradition and other musical traditions, including popular music.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. command a critical knowledge of the basic rudiments of music;


  2. identify and evaluate a list of representative music pieces;


  3. master the stylistic features of Western and Chinese Music; and


  4. critically analyse music’s place in the social/historical/cultural development of society.
