Module Description
This module is designed to survey selected musical areas of Africa and the Americas, Europe, and Asia. By learning about the music of different regions, students gain new understanding of their own musical traditions, contemporary music lives, and also of music in other geographic regions. We shall explore the sounds and structures of various musical traditions and contemporary genres; different ethnic communities and their musical activities in socio-cultural contexts; and other related issues. Their musical traditions will be covered in detail through readings, listening examples, videos, and class discussion. In addition, the course introduces some basic concepts of ethnomusicology for training students to develop basic listening and analytical skills.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. master the fundamental knowledge about the covered musical cultures;

  2. identify and analyse the stylistic features of music pieces;

  3. demonstrate a level of competence in working independently, thinking creatively and critically; and

  4. achieve a professional attitude in awareness of and appreciation for the significance of music within all societies.
